Two Old Codgers

How the World strikes us

The recent storming of Capitol Hill brings all manner of thoughts to

mind. Some of them stem from pure, unadulterated prejudice. First and foremost, I don't like Donald Trump. This is quite irrational and can only be based on what I see and hear in British news reports.

I decided I didn't like the look of the man and from thereon I picked out the bits of news which strengthened my dislike and totally ignored anything positive about the man or his policies.

The second thought is, why do we become so polarised? Over recent years we have been able to break down problems of communication to the point where ideas, concepts, arguments, lies and fake news are available to all at the press of a button. Sadly we humans don't have the mental ability to sort the wheat from the chaff, and tend to let our hearts rule our heads and select the things that affect us emotionally.

These emotional reactions get in the way of rational thought. We all have them. Just think of the way you react to certain things. Animal

rights, The Cat Protection League, Veganism, Black Lives Matter, child abuse and then look at groups such as QAnon which believes that Covid-19 is a hoax designed to deflect attention from a Satan-worshipping pedophile ring operated by Hillary Clinton and liberal elites. Donald Trump is reckoned to be leading the battle against this elite group. Incidentally, QAnon banners featured large in the recent attack on Capitol; Hill.

Back to polarity. In America the division between Democrats and Republicans seems to be whisker thin. A quick look at the internet suggests that over 40% of the US population supports Donald Trump. I don't know what the common view of Donald Trump is in the UK but amongst the people I speak with, it is not very complementary. Those Countries who are anti Western democracy must rub their hand in glee whenever he opens his mouth.
